Mesa is the anchor of many aspects of life in the East Valley. It is the third-largest city in Arizona (only after Phoenix and Tucson). It borders Tempe on its west, Chandler and Gilbert on its south, and Apache Junction on the east.

Mesa was incorporated in 1883 with a population of 300 people. It remained a small community until the 1940s, when the establishment of Falcon Field and Williams Field brought military personnel to the area. The widespread availability of air conditioning increased the population of Mesa (and the entire Phoenix area) throughout the 1950s and 1960s. By the time of the 2010 census, Mesa was home to nearly a half million residents.

Mesa has many freeways that access the rest of the Phoenix metro area. This makes it an easy commute to other parts of town. It has redeveloped its downtown district – most notably with the opening of the Mesa Arts Center in 2005. Many employers are based in Mesa, and all these factors make it popular destination for homeowners and renters in the Phoenix area.

Mesa has a far east-to-west reach. It can therefore make a big difference in your commute whether you live in West Mesa (nearer Tempe) or East Mesa (nearer to Apache Junction and the Tonto National Forest). Carefully consider your commute, amenities, and needs before choosing a neighborhood in Mesa.
